Background

Baz Jethwa started his business in 2004, he now has two Costcutter stores in Bolton. Baz’s original plan was to have a number of stores in Bolton. However, after the recession he realised that was not the way forward. Instead, Baz decided to focus on making his stores a community store that customers could visit to buy everything they need – from groceries and frozen food to hot food-to-go.

Challenge

Baz’s main challenge was the competition from local competitors, he said: “Customers don’t always know that a local shop will sell everything they need, but once they’ve come in and seen what we offer, they come back again.” Customers of Baz’s were looking for an easy way to shop, complete with good service, a point of difference and a good availability of all products. Convenience was key.

Solution

On choosing Carrs Pasties, Baz said: “It’s a big brand in Bolton, with a great service and a really good product, we had another pie brand before but it didn’t create the same effect that Carrs Pasties does. In a nutshell, you don’t have to worry about a Carrs Pasties product, because you know that if you take care of it, it will sell.” Baz has seen an increase in footfall since implementing Carrs Pasties but he’s also seen an uplift in sales too – particularly in hot food sales.

Speaking about working with Carrs Pasties, Baz said: “Simply the best. Genuinely, it’s the easiest relationship, Carrs Pasties are always willing to help”. Baz buys frozen unbaked pasties which are baked off fresh in both of his shops, he loves that customers always get a fresh product.
